Climate changes causing disasters, mass evacuations and delays in insurance claims

Year-round flooding on a global scale is very likely for the foreseeable future. This statement is born out of today’s evidence.

In addition to flooding, raging bush and bush fires caused by natural events are becoming more severe than scientists think they are due to rising global temperatures. You can’t ignore the global headlines, or the pitifully visual proof, because modern communications give us access to devastation.

Most people around the world are insured against disasters and have a right to expect that their claim will be handled with sympathy and reasonable efficiency by their chosen insurer. Many families have been forced to evacuate their homes and in some cases have to endure unsanitary conditions in accommodation provided by the emergency services. Most are happy just to be safe, but as time passes, patience and camaraderie wear thin.

The pressure that insurers are having to bear is largely of their own making due to their policies on hiring supply chain contractors. Almost without exception they push for lower and lower prices and then demand exceptionally high levels of service. The simple truth is obvious, you can’t get a dollar out of a pot of two hundred. In Cumbria, northwest England, an estimated 270 families have been evacuated to temporary accommodation as a result of the flooding. Areas around Sydney Australia and LA in the US have seen disastrous bush and bush fires and everyone has seen the devastation caused by the water in New Orleans and South East Asia. These disasters were caused by weather conditions that some have attributed to Global Warming.

It has been estimated that approximately 40,000 families have been displaced and this is just from the newsworthy areas.

So, where does the Insured go to make sure their claim is accepted? Not just accepted but within a reasonable timeframe and to an appropriate standard? How are you going to get into the strange and mystical world of insurance settlements? Well, it all starts with the proper selection of your policy.

There are literally thousands of insurance companies that can provide you with and will offer you incentives to buy from them. They want you to buy at price. You should not fall into temptation, look for value for money. Make a list of the key things that are important to you and shop around until you have these covered. Be sure and check your current insurers. You may have been with them for years, but they may not have a track record in dealing with disasters.

You must be able to control and trust all contractors in the supply chain. These are Restoration Companies, Restoration Specialists, Builders, Decorators and Machinists. Never forget that you are in control of your home, even if it needs substantial restoration. The threshold of your home is inviolable and must remain under your control. Due to the sheer volume of claims, no one has the time to handle matters as well as you do.

A loss adjuster will almost certainly be instructed to handle your claim on behalf of the insurers. Their statute requires them to stand between the Insurer and the Policyholder. Its role is to ensure that both parties strictly comply with the terms of the policy. Wonderful because reality is a bit gray. Insurers treat them as part of the supply chain and pressure them to reduce claim costs. This action alone could ruin your claim. You need to know how to handle loss adjusters.

With the world’s climate changing and causing freak conditions due to natural disasters, we all need to be very focused on what could happen to our community and our way of life. Therefore, we have to protect it and the only way to do that is to secure it. So what happens next with your situation?
