Weber’s Wild Beginnings

Weber College was named for a fur trapper and trader who called Salt Lake City his home in the 19th century. After its conglomeration in 1889, the school rose to new heights in both education and athletics. The Varsity now has a respectable 21,000 academics and dozens of highly talented athletic groups. Between hockey, rodeo, basketball, and a magnificent Wildcat mascot, Weber State School is attracting dozens of scholars and fans from far and wide. Who can’t help but love a university that prides itself on wonderful education and top-notch sports programs?

Dribbling towards success, the Weber State men’s basketball team has received several awards and recognition for their hard work. The team and its mascot Wildcat even made the list of the greatest basketball programs in university history. Don’t think the women’s basketball team can’t keep up because they’re setting themselves up to live up to the Weber name. The team has competed in the championship games for 3 years in a row.

The beautiful, user-friendly design of the Weber State College website offers its visitors a way to learn about the College. The website tells the story of the college’s own wild mascot, Waldo. Waldo is no ordinary pet. Waldo’s story is a reasonably fun read. Wally Morris was a Weber State football team. Thanks in part to a player on the team insulting him and another player defending him, he received the name Wildcat Morris. Derived from Wally’s nickname and a title thrown about the group from a local reports article, the Wildcat name stuck like glue. Although the faculty president was strongly against the name, the academics and fans won out in the end.

A live wild mascot was displayed at every school meeting until the unsuspecting creature yelled at one of the students. Waldo has finally taken over the job as mascot and does a brilliant job of entertaining everyone on game day. Although Waldo fits the Wildcat profile, he’s not like the wily felines found on the foothills of Utah. Waldo the Wildcat pet is a lovable fellow who can win the heart of any child. Along with the support of the school, fans and academics of him, Waldo the bobcat mascot will be around indefinitely.
