4-drawer file cabinet: what material should I choose?

The cost of a 4-drawer file cabinet depends mainly on the materials used, the lock and the dimensions. If you choose a product that is fire and impact resistant, you could end up earning a few hundred dollars more. However, you would be adding much more protection to the files your cabinet contains.

There are essentially two types of filing cabinets. One is a vertical file cabinet and the other has a more conventional look, tall and slim. These cabinets typically contain 2-5 drawers and can hold letter or legal size files.

To assess the quality of the materials used, check the suspension system that supports the drawers. Even when very full, quality drawers will slide smoothly and easily. Also check for safety features, such as those that prevent the cabinet from tipping over when many or all of the drawers are open. Counterbalanced drawers and internal locking features are ideal here. Also, when checking metal or wood material, it should be strong and thick. If you’re considering a metal cabinet, make sure it has a protective coating that prevents rust.

Fire and impact resistant materials can add up to $500 to the cost of purchasing your 4-drawer file cabinet. However, it is worth the investment if you have sensitive and very important files stored in the office. File cabinets made of metal are best for office use. In this case, always check for dents and teeth when evaluating quality. Wood cabinets are great for homes as they are more aesthetically pleasing. You may want to choose oak as it is one of the strongest wood materials available.
