When it gets worse with EFT before it gets better

There are at least partial results every time you do an EFT session. This is true whether you are doing EFT on your own or with a practitioner. And tappers usually feel better between sessions than when they first started working on the particular issue with EFT. However, on occasion, the symptoms worsen after a session. Why is this and what can we do about it?

In a small minority of cases, when we start working on a problem, it gets worse before it gets better. In all healing modalities, this is a phenomenon so well known that it has its own name: a healing crisis. Experiencing a healing crisis does not mean that the tapping has not worked. And unless you haven’t gotten even a partial result in a full session, that doesn’t mean EFT doesn’t work for you. Rather, I find that this is because a part of us wants to draw attention to their need for healing. And the only way you can do that is by drawing your attention to your symptoms.

Let’s consider weight loss as an example. I have worked with many weight loss clients for whom a specific food craving was totally relieved but who continued to simply maintain their weight. Some have even temporarily put on weight. What this means is that we address current cravings for some foods, but we don’t address the core issues behind the weight. In contrast, when both current cravings and various core issues are addressed, the weight is lost. This is what happened to Marianne, who released her craving for chocolate and also released relevant core issues. Marianne had tried before but she hadn’t gotten very far. And you can be successful too, even if there is a temporary setback first.

Sometimes the core issues are elusive. It may well be that the door through which you can access the core problems are the symptoms themselves. In each session, the symptoms can provide a new core problem to work on. And sometimes a part of us wants to move on and another part feels insecure about doing so. An easy way to solve this is to continuously tap on all your favorite points while the two parties talk to each other. This is an EFT version of part therapy or part healing. You can give each party two minutes to talk, and then switch to the other party for two minutes, then switch back and continue like this for about 20 minutes or so. You can then work separately on anything that has come up in the process. We can also thank our mental body for drawing our attention to the symptoms so that we can complete our healing.

When you work with what your mental body gives you as signals and cues, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good you feel in the end. In the meantime, persistent tapping can do wonders for keeping you balanced.
