The 7 Best Symbian Application Development Apps

Some say that Symbian application development is not as exciting as iPhone or Blackberry application development. I have prepared a list of my 7 favorite applications available on Symbian to counter this accusation.

Many feel that Symbian is losing the battle against smartphones based on BlackBerry, iPhone and Android. While Symbian’s market share has shrunk over time, especially in the Asian and European markets, where Nokia phones have dominated the market for years. One reason often given is the advent of smartphones and the app culture that has developed around them.

It has often been said that Symbian application development has not taken off as well as that of its rivals iPhone and BlackBerry, but more than 300,000 applications are downloaded to Nokia devices every day, and there are numerous Symbian applications on the market. Below is the list of my 7 favorite Symbian apps.

Gravity: This Mobileways application allows the user to access their Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and other social media accounts. It also makes uploading photos quicker and easier for most popular sites, including Flickr and Twit Pic. It’s especially great for Twitter users as it has almost all the features you’d find in a Twitter desktop app.

Best Screenshot – The names say it all – it provides the best screenshot you can get, and you can also send the screenshots to your friends and your desktop. It allows you to save the screenshot as color BMP, JPG and 256 color BMP, and it also automatically generates names for the images, which makes your task easier.

Qik: This app is an example of smart Symbian app development. It allows you to stream/broadcast your videos over the internet using your phone’s camera. It’s amazing when you can see feedback from viewers as your performance continues.

Handy Task man – This application will simplify the use of your smartphone and allow you to manage multiple applications with ease and boost. You can get a bigger view of your app list after installing Handy Task-man and it makes switching and force-quitting frozen apps a breeze. It shows your available RAM and storage options, and does a lot more to make handling your smartphone smoother.

Joikuspot: Symbian app development has delivered a gem. Joikuspot turns your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot, people used to connecting should try this, it works better. You can use your laptop anywhere once you have this app. Its premium version is very useful as it comes with a password and makes it impossible for other users to steal from your Wi-Fi!

Google Maps: I was very happy when Google Maps became available for Symbian. It fits perfectly with the look of Symbian and its features that let me know my position and show me my destination on the map. Now I never need to ask for directions.

Shazam: Has it ever happened to you that you are in a mall or on the road and you hear amazing music and you want to know who the artist is? Shazam is Symbian app development’s gift to random music lovers: you just need to let this app listen to a part of the song and it will show up with the artist and band names!
