Password Recovery Tips for Windows XP Users

Although Windows XP was released 10 years ago, many users have no idea what to do when they forget Windows XP password. The following is a list of Windows XP password recovery tips presented for those who are still sticking to the ten year old operating system.

Tip 1. Use a built-in administrator account

Premise: The built-in administrator account is not password protected.

1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete twice at the Windows XP login screen.

2. Type “administrator” in the username box, and then click OK on the next “Log on to Windows” window.

3. Click Start, click the Run box, and then type “monitor passwords for user2”, click OK.

4. In the classic user account window, select the target user account and click the “Reset password” button.

Tip 2. Use safe mode

Premise: You can use safe mode as administrator.

1. Turn on the computer, press F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options.

2. Select Safe Mode, and then log in as an administrator.

3. In safe mode, click Start, and then select the Run box.

4. Type “control user2 passwords”, click OK.

5. In the Users interface, select the user account, and then click Reset Password.

Tip 3. Use Command Prompt

Premise: You can use safe mode as administrator.

1. Repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer is starting up.

2. Select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” from the Windows Advanced Options menu and press Enter.

3. Enter your administrator account password to enter safe mode. You will see the Windows command prompt after entering safe mode.

4. Enter “network user” in the command prompt and press Enter.

5. Enter “network user Jack 123456” at the command prompt and press Enter. “Jack” refers to the name of your target user account, while “123456” refers to the new password for your target user account.

Tip 4 – Use the password reset disk

Premise: You have created a password reset disk before you forgot your password.

1. Insert your password reset disk into the computer.

2. Type an incorrect password and press Enter.

3. A suggestion “use your password reset disk” will appear, click on it.

4. Follow the steps in the Password Reset Wizard to reset your password.

Tip 5 – Use System Recovery Options

Premise: A system repair disc or Windows installation CD is required.

1. Boot the computer from the system repair disc.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

3. Click Next to repair your computer.

4. After the computer repair is complete, select a recovery option and click Next to reset your forgotten Windows password.
