Letter to Sundance

The Station Agent, Whiplash, The House I Live In, How to Die in Oregon, Winter’s Bone and Precious have something in common. All have been screened and won an award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

The festival began in 1978 and was simply called the Utah/USA Film Festival. It was born to give Utah filmmakers a place to showcase their films and also to inspire American filmmakers to make and screen their films. The festival is an annual event that takes place in Park City Utah every January and today, it’s called Sundance after Robert Redford’s character in the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

This festival is one of the largest in the world and is a showcase for new work by independent filmmakers. What was once a small town festival is today something attended by the Hollywood elite, paparazzi and non-Hollywood folk alike. She gets headlines in entertainment magazines as well as local and national news as she is who’s who in the world of entertainment. Some winners go on to win top prizes while others are never seen again, but showing a film at such a prestigious festival is sometimes all the people associated with it want.

So if you’ve thought about attending the Sundance Film Festival, but don’t like being near Park City, Utah, you can get there by chartering a plane.
