Handmade Jewelry Descriptions

One problem many of us have is finding words to describe our handmade jewelry. Designing a product is inspiring. The assembly of the product depends on our craft skills. But writing detailed descriptions of handmade jewelry has its challenges.

“Become the center of attention with this beautiful red bead bracelet.” This sentence does not truly describe the bracelet nor will it attract a buyer. “Let your friends envy this three-strand 8” red bead bracelet; this statement will not sell the product.

Ordering from an online source, brochure, or catalog requires images that help the buyer see and feel the item with the use of words.

Viewing Tip:

  • Put on a blindfold and have someone read one of the descriptions of your jewelry that you have written. Are you able to visualize the piece of jewelry or will you have to remove the blindfold?
  • Ask that same person to read aloud a description of a piece of jewelry from a catalog or magazine. Make a mental or physical picture of the piece of jewelry. Does the piece of jewelry reflect the written description?

Choose words wisely:

Select adjectives that give precision to your handmade jewelry descriptions of the necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants, anklets, and other jewelry accessories you are selling. Use words that will paint a true picture of the finished jewelry product.

Descriptive word choices may include:

  • Size: one size or specific size list
  • Technician – netting
  • Color adjectives – sunset pink
  • Construction materials – teak wood imported from Africa
  • Unique name: African sunset
  • A story related to the source of inspiration.
  • Inspiration – the oasis of the Sahara desert
  • Manufactured number – one of a kind or limited edition
  • emotional responses

Don’t use too many adjectives or flowery expressions. Describing the item will help the customer visualize the product and help eliminate disappointment, negative publicity due to a poor description or returning an unwanted purchase for a refund.

Consider the customers to whom you are addressing and use words appropriate to the gender and age of the client. Children’s jewelry would be described very differently than adult jewelry.

How will it benefit the customer? Will this unique piece of jewelry fulfill your dreams or desires for your special occasion or event?

help customer with emotional descriptions as well as precise physical qualities of handmade jewelry. Don’t over romance the description.
