Fall prevention for the elderly

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury-related hospitalization and death, and one of the leading reasons for admission to complex care settings.

Fall prevention is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Causes of falls

– decreased vision
– taking unnecessary risks (eg, standing on a stool to reach items on the top shelf when you have poor balance)
– the use of medicines can decrease balance, cause dizziness, drowsiness and other side effects that can lead to falls
– chronic illnesses can affect strength, stamina and balance
– fear of falling can actually lead to falls, as people who are afraid of falling tend to be less active

Tips to prevent falls

– regular eye exams
– ensure adequate lighting in the home
– remove clutter at home
– ensure handrails on stairs
– wear sturdy shoes
– take medicines as prescribed and talk to your doctor about side effects
– use support services (cleaning, etc.) if these activities are too much work for you
– maintain your strength, stamina and balance by staying active and listening to your body
– use a mobility aid if you have decreased balance, strength and stamina. It may be beneficial to be evaluated by an occupational and/or physical therapist.
– learn to get up off the ground if you fall
– if you live alone, consider having a senior medical alert system that you can use to call for help if you fall
– get rid of rugs and other tripping hazards in your home
– install safety equipment in the bathroom (non-slip mat, grab bars, etc.)

How to get up from a fall

– Locate a sturdy piece of furniture (chair, bed, desk)
– roll sideways
– crawl to the furniture bringing a mobility aid (if you have one)
– from the kneeling position, put your arms on the furniture
– place the strongest leg/foot on the floor
– push up with arms/legs and sit on furniture
– sit down, rest and ask for help if you are hurt
