TEN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ST. LUICA

1. Most flights and all larger planes fly into Hewanorra International Airport in the southern city of Vieux-Fort. However, most hotel rooms are located in the far north, closer to Castries, which is served by the George FL Charles Airport at Vigie. Journey time by taxi from Hewanorra Airport to the northern tip of the island is 1-1.5 hours.

2. Most of our people speak a creole of French origin, or French patois, properly known as Kweyol, which is said to be the only indigenous language of the Caribbean.

3. Although we were a British colony before independence, its city and place names are in French because our education system has traditionally been in the hands of the French-oriented Catholic Church.

4. The two St. Lucian pythons, Petit Piton and Gros Piton, on the southwestern coast of the island are classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

5. Honeymooners love our island because it’s what a romantic tropical island should look like: hilly with numerous palm trees, loads of tropical flowers including orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise. Some consider Saint Lucia the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. I would not disagree with them.

6. We have genuine rainforest, which means it rains a lot in some places: around 60 inches on the coast and up to 160 inches in the interior jungles. January to April are the driest months, with April being the driest of the year. June to October is the wet period, with August being the rainiest month.

7. Due to the volcanic origin of our island, most of its beaches are dark sand, not the sparkling white of the Bahamas or the Virgin Islands.

8. We Have Surprisingly Cold Water Temperatures – Despite its location in the deep Caribbean, the water averages 72 degrees F year-round, requiring a full wetsuit or shortie for most swimmers. divers feel comfortable underwater.

9. Although the Eastern Caribbean dollar, or EC, is the island’s currency, US dollars are generally accepted everywhere.

10. We have also produced two Nobel laureates; both were born on January 23 decades apart. The late Sir W. Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979. The poet Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.

And two extras:

11. Most of the big hotels on the islands are all-inclusive. Some of our smaller hotels are known around the world.

12. We have the only “drive-in volcano” in the world.

So come to Saint Lucia. I promise you will not be disappointed.
