Be Safe and Ready to Climb Mountains Part I

When planning a great outdoor adventure, mountaineering or hiking may be some of your options, right?

When it comes to this type of outdoor bonding activity, there are many mountains that some professional climbers frequently suggest. So if you want to experience true enjoyment and excitement, why not climb to the top of one majestic peak in particular that is considered the highest in the country.

However, before you get so excited, especially when preparing your trekking essentials, try looking at the following tips first for that safe climb and one that is worth remembering:

1. Start the day with a good and healthy breakfast. Having a nutrient-filled first meal of the day will help you get enough carbohydrates to give you the energy you need before the climb. So before joining your pack to climb mountains, make sure you’ve included oatmeal or rice in your breakfast.

2. Inform your family about your adventure and when to expect you to return. This is very important when we talk about security. Think about this: When you said you would be coming home two days later but were unable to do so, your family (or friends) can notify concerned authorities who can help search for you.

3. Ask PAG-ASA or the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration for the latest weather updates. When considering hiking as an outdoor bonding pastime, you should befriend your weather guys. This means you need to frequent their website and keep an eye out for weather updates on TV, radio, in the newspaper, and even on social media. If weather experts say that it would be unwise to leave all four corners of your house for a certain period of time, stay! Take no chances. After all, you can always check the mountain at any time weather permitting. Remember, you can never leave where you are now.

4. Take some tools with you that can help you navigate. If you are in an unfamiliar place, you certainly need the help of a map, a compass, and a guide. Nothing beats someone who is prepared and the fact that you don’t have to worry when you feel like you’re heading into an unknown space while climbing to the apex of the mountain. When you have this “army of navigation tools”, you and your colleagues can always ask for their help should the need arise.

Stay tuned for the second of these practical tips to prepare for your mountaineering getaway.
