Why Learning Martial Arts Can Help You

Learning martial arts is now a necessity rather than a privilege. Before, learning the arts was not open to everyone, only a few could learn the “secrets” of martial arts. Ever since martial arts movies became hits, everyone wants to emulate what they see on screen. This paved the way for the masters to open the doors and teach their “secret” art.

When studying martial arts, it is not necessary to be physically fit, as this is actually the result and not the prerequisite for learning the arts. Other benefits include increased confidence, self-discipline, better health, and many more.

Aside from the benefits of exercise, it develops discipline. For me, the most important reason to learn is the ability to protect myself, my family and my loved ones.

All my colleagues and friends have their own reasons for learning, most of them are positive but there are some that are negative. Basically, the reasons can be divided into 3 groups; self defense, physical fitness, to compete. Here are some reasons given by friends and colleagues.

I want to learn to defend myself and my family. (self defense)

I want to lose 15 pounds! (physical aptitude)

I have no choice, my father is a master of the arts. (can be all 3)

My confidence has increased. (self-defense; fitness)

I was inspired by Bruce Lee. (physical aptitude)

I was bullied at school. (self defense)

My friends are in Tae Bo. (physical aptitude)

I joined a class and have been hooked ever since! (self-defense; fitness)

I want to be the next BJ Penn. (compete)

I was mugged and I didn’t know how to protect myself. (self defense)

I just want to hit someone; let off steam (compete)

Whatever your reasons, it can only bring you positive results if you train hard enough and learn from the right teacher.
