How to build your network of success

I am always looking for new ways to develop my business. And in the tradition of keeping things simple, networking came into the mix.

Than? “net?” That’s a scary word, especially for us introverts!

For most of us writers (and introverts), the very utterance of the word makes us cringe. Yes, it is so bad.

We would like to think that we work in a world of comfortable and safe solitude, but the pure natural fact is…

… We do not! And you shouldn’t if you want to amp up your game a notch or two.

The truth is that I am seriously introverted and somewhat shy. It is my nature to resist the whole notion of networking.

Here’s the crazy thing… I’ve been networking the whole time and didn’t even realize it.

My little network was made up of printers, competitors, colleagues, teachers, friends, heck, I even had a few trusted family members in my network.

Each in their own way helped me out of the doldrums and into success from the start.

Hey, if the professionals in your field network, then maybe you should consider that too. Therefore, overcome your bad self and turn on the rhythm of your network. You need this and it’s not so bad once you start.

If nothing else, go out and get yourself a “starter” network. This can consist of people you’ll probably never meet, like business people you admire, authors, bloggers.

The point is that you can follow them and learn from them.

Another great way to build your network is to start attending various events like masterminds, training events, and seminars in your field. This is a great way to meet new people who can help you along the way.

The rule is, however, to give more than you take. Be calm for God’s sake and don’t come like a vulture that wants, wants, wants.

Do these people a professional courtesy and offer your services for a discount. Be prepared to give some of your time and listen to their problems and help them find a solution. It never hurts to lend a hand from time to time, especially when you’re just starting out.

Selfish people get shunned and ignored, so don’t be one of “those guys.”

So go out and get yourself a Rolodex (Carlton’s favorite way of keeping track of people). Or if you like digital tools, keep track of people this way.

Starting point now…

A small network can be powerful and very profitable. You do not believe me?

This is what John Carlton says:

“I like to remind skeptics that I made my first small fortune from a network list of about 300 people. It was a geyser of good clients, good friends who referred me, and colleagues who had my back and helped me solve all the problems I encountered. It’s a much bigger list now, but those first few hundred were an eye opener in the power of networking.”

Yours for higher profits,
