A big question many American golfers face is whether or not they should get a golf membership at their favorite course. By solving these two questions located in this article, you will be able to determine whether or not you want a new golf membership.
The first question is to decide how much you plan to play golf. This is a simple mathematical solution. Let’s say you live in the north and the golf season is about 6 months. If you plan to go twice a week for those 6 months, that would equate to 48 rounds of golf. Multiply that number by the cost of paying green fees and a round of golf at your local course. If this number is higher than the cost of membership, join the club! If this cost is lower than the membership, I suggest you wait and pay as you go. Membership in my home course, for example, has been $500.00. I plan to golf about 4 rounds each week for a total of 6 months. That works out to about 96 rounds per year. A round of 18 holes also costs around $20.00. The total cost if you were to pay as you go would be $1,920.00. Obviously, it would save me money to buy the $500.00 membership in this course.
The second issue is deciding what you like to play. Some golfers enjoy going to a different course each week and experiencing different layouts, holes, yardage, and different people. If you’re this type of person, then you’re stuck on one course for the whole summer and a membership is probably not a good thing. If you’re the type who likes to play on the same field and work on your overall game, then a membership is probably best for you.
These are two questions you’ll want to consider before deciding on a membership. I think a golf membership is a great thing and can help you save some money over the summer. Some courses will even have offers to entice new members to sign up. On a final note, be sure to do some research on what your golf membership entails, as some memberships cover different benefits.
