Attributes of Color in Esotericism and Traditional Ritual Magic

Color plays an essential role in all forms of ritual magic, meditation, and all forms of ritual practice. Colors are very powerful spiritual, emotional and physical energies that influence all planes. Colors gain their power as timeless elements of nature that are considered absolute, that is, they apply to all entities in all realms.

The interpretation of hidden color attributes varies widely between disciplines and cultures; this guide bases the attributions on the spectra of white light, primary, secondary and tertiary light. It is essential that the practitioner choose a color for a particular job based on their own comfort level and intuitive sense for the selected color.

The following attributes can be used for focus, invocation, and visualization during ritual and mediation. It is important to remember that the following associations apply to traditional Ritual Magic, which is itself a spiritual discipline. One is cautioned to avoid applying labels or assuming the meaning of colors in mundane or ordinary reality, as color perception is very different on the spiritual plane.

Spiritually colors are vibrations of Light, entities and energies with specific and distinct actions. With the exception of the color black, this in ordinary reality is a color, but spiritually it is the absence of light or the absence of color, a shadow.

Visible color exists in a small area of the entire spectrum of light, however spiritual color attributes exist both visibly (monochromatic) and spectrally (unseen by the naked eye).

color categories

White: Sure, all colors combined

Black: Spiritually it is not a color, but an absence of light.

Primaries: red, blue, yellow

Secondaries: Orange, Purple, Green

Tertiary: yellow/orange, red/orange, red/purple, blue/purple, blue/green, yellow/green

White:

Spiritually white is the color of spiritual radiance that shines from the center of being and from the face of the All. White is clear and transparent, encompassing the attributes of all colors and none. White is pure and like pure water it has no taste, but it permeates all things. White is the spirit of the non-manifest, which is everywhere and nowhere, promoting vision, but it is not seen. The perception of white invokes the senses of creation, all things, and white returns all things to this state.

White is frequently seen in traditional ritual magic to represent the force of divinity, unknown or divine intervention and invokes the energy of purity and creation for the ritual intent.

Black:

Spiritually, black is not a real color, but it is the result when the light is removed. Black is the antithesis of spirit and can best be understood as a shadow, an illusion, or utter darkness. The energy of black exists only because of light like all things. Black is hollow, empty, unpretentious illusion. Black does not really exist and therefore cannot be destroyed but only banished by the Light. Black is always ready to return the instant the light goes out. Due to humanity’s fall from grace, the illusory qualities of black appear real and are believed to exist and therefore can manifest as cruelty, hate, indifference, violence and the only quality that unites them is emptiness (Tyson , 1988).

Due to the illusory characteristics of black, it cannot exist in the presence of Light, and therefore divine agents associated with Light, such as angels, deities, or nature spirits associated with fire, sun, or the energies of lightning, banish darkness instantly and immediately. it is universal law that it should stop being like a candle flame that illuminates a dark room.

Black serves as an ideal example of one of the differences between visible color and spectral or spiritual color. The visible black color serves as a symbol invoking the vibration or influence of what it represents according to the ritual or meditation. The visible color black is examined in color theory in relation to other visible colors in the light spectrum. Black does not exist on the plane of spectral light, but as a true paradox, it exists in the form of emptiness, nothingness, shadow, illusion, and absence of light.
