The festival of vibrant colors, Holi is celebrated in February or March on the day of the full moon, popularly called Phalgun Purnima. It is the second most recognized celebration in India. The origin of this colorful festival is believed to be the famous legends of Holika-Prahlad and Radha-Krishna. Although it is an Indian based festival, there are many who appreciate and participate in the joyous event all over the world. Spread the universal message of peace, mutual growth and equality.

Holi this year will be celebrated on March 20 according to the “Hindu calendar”. Everyone is busy planning things for this day. This spring festival has fascinated people because of the joy and the game, music and dance that it implies. A week before, the local markets are flooded with numerous items like colours, pichkaris, cards, sweets, dried fruits and many more. There these things are available in different ranges.

Over the years, the occasion has lost much of its charm for reasons for which we ourselves are actually responsible. In order to avoid such defamatory incidents, we need to consider a few things including:

1. Never go for cheaper brands.

2. Check the expiration dates of the colors that are sold there.

3. Use only natural-based colors or “gulals.”

4. Stay away from chemical colors.

5. The freedom to celebrate without restrictions doesn’t mean you get boisterous and break the rules.

6. Don’t force people too much to participate in playing watercolors.

7. Do not throw water balloons at moving vehicles or passersby.

8. Avoid excessive intake of intoxicating drinks or opium-based sweets.

Here are some tips to play Holi safely without spoiling the joy of the day. Remember that it is about celebrating the triumph of good over evil. So keep these things in mind and avoid any unnecessary incidents and show the world the true nature of Indian culture which reflects rich traditions, unity, tolerance, secularism.
