Hiking trips make up a large percentage of vacations and getaways, and for a number of good reasons. Hiking is an activity that provides physical exercise and allows the mind to get away from the problems and stresses of everyday life and focus on what is right in front of them: nature. Whether it’s a summer hike through Glacier Gorge Colorado to appreciate the waterfalls or a winter hike through the Canyon Loop Trail, a sense of wonder and wonder is sure to set in.
Naming the “best” hiking spots in Colorado would be strictly up to the observer; since the trails range from beginners to more advanced and dangerous areas. However, here are my picks for the three nicest and most enjoyable “get away from it all” trails.
glacier gorge
Length: 9.6 miles
Trail type: Roundtrip
Top Elevation: 10,600 feet
Nearby City: Estes Park
Season: Mid-Summer to Mid-Autumn.
Located in Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll see wildflowers and alpine lakes. Glacier Gorge is a U-shaped canyon that was carved out by glaciers. A few feet from the trailhead is Bear Lake Branches on the right and thirty minutes later you will come to the first point of interest – a beautiful waterfall called Alberta Falls.
Long peak
Length: 14 miles
Trail type: Roundtrip
Top Elevation: 12,800 feet
Nearest Town: Allens Park
Also located in Rocky Mountain National Park, Longs Peak is actually the highest in the Rocky Mountains. Longs Peak boasts the most climbed route of any route in the state: The Keyhole Route. This is usually quite a traveled path which might not work for you if your goal is to avoid other people, but it may be ideal if you are traveling solo as there will be other people nearby to assist you if you need it. Tip: it’s long, so save your energy!
Devil’s Canyon Loop
Length: 3.2 miles
Trail Type: Loop
Top Elevation: 7,420 feet
Nearest city: Boulder
Devil’s Canyon Loop Trail is an awesome sight. Painted canyon walls, red valleys, and massive rock columns make this trail a must-see. The Loop is filled with waterfalls and sandstone cliffs and is colored with sage and juniper (which also makes for a fragrant hike)!
Whichever trail you choose, your Colorado hike is sure to be a memorable one. Make sure you are prepared with a plan, map, and adequate supplies for the duration of your trip. Another tip: bring a camera so you can share your adventure with family and friends when you get back home!
