Legal Sports Betting in the United States

Legal Sports Betting

In the United States, all but a handful of states have legalized sports betting. New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania have all taken the lead in this regard, although Alaska and Hawaii have been slow to implement the laws. In addition, the two states have different gaming traditions. Some of the barriers to legal sports betting include the tax revenue that will be lost from gambling in neighboring states and the relationship between New York and New Jersey.

Most states have legalized sports wagering, including Nevada, New Jersey, and New York. The other eighteen are close behind and have passed laws to legalize online betting. Many of these states also have mobile sportsbook applications, while others will only allow wagering at sportsbooks. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted more states to consider legalizing the activity. The gambling industry is more likely to help fight problem gambling, which spawned the illegal activity.

Since the Supreme Court’s decision, many states have begun to legalize the industry. There are now 27 states and Washington D.C. that offer legal sports betting. Different states have different types of sports betting options. In WV, the only legal online providers were DraftKings and FanDuel. As of this writing, these companies have restored their mobile presence and there are now five land-based casinos that offer legal sports betting.

While it is still early in the game, the process has moved slowly. While Massachusetts and New York have long pursued legal sports betting, the state legislatures in both these states have not yet done so. Kentucky and Wyoming recently passed mobile legislation bills that allow sports gambling, but lawsuits in court could delay their implementation. Georgia lawmakers recently passed a bill that would regulate sports gambling through a newly-formed corporation. A legal sports betting bill in Georgia may not make it to the ballot until 2022.

In Alabama, the Senate passed Senate Bills 310 and 319, but the House did not take up the legislation. In Alaska, two Class II tribal casinos generate $3.7 million in tax revenue every year. In Minnesota, the state has yet to pass a bill that would legalize sports betting. In New Hampshire, the law will only be finalized after the governor signs it. If it passes, bettors in both states will be able to place bets legally.

New York and Massachusetts have passed laws that will allow sports betting. The two states are in the process of implementing this legislation. While Massachusetts and New York have had legalized sports betting for several years, they have only recently made it official. In Kentucky, a mobile legislation bill will likely pass during the next year. In California, the state legislature has vowed to put the measure on the ballot in 2022. While sports betting is still a controversial issue in the U.S., it is still worth keeping an eye on.
