One of the biggest problems men have when dating women is the existence or appearance of the dreaded friend. This is a very difficult subject because, as boys, no one knows men better than we do and we know for a fact that there is no such thing as a “boy friend.” Any man who wants to be friends with his girlfriend has an agenda, either he wants to sleep with her now or keep her in the background so he can try to sleep with her later or he wants to use her as bait so she can introduce him to other girls. Be the alpha male.
The last thing you want to do is start a fight with your friend, girls hate guys like that. However, you can easily become the alpha male and win the mental war without having to fight a physical battle. You should preferably start from day one, meeting number one, or as soon as possible if this guy is in your life right now defeating the alpha male. Make eye contact with him, be brief and serious when talking to him, be friendly but not his friend. If your girlfriend is not around, be as cool as possible to her friends. Never make plans to date him. You want to mentally let him know that you are on top of his games and that his time is not worth spending wandering around your territory.
Be nice to your girlfriends.
Women value their independence, and one of the first subconscious arguments they will make when considering getting rid of their friend is that by doing so they are giving up their independence and any sense of an independent life without you. You need to completely defuse this argument by fostering an independent life that allows you to leave your friend completely and still feel in control. One of the best ways to do this is to be nice to your girlfriends and nurture those relationships. If you are nice to your girlfriends, it will pay dividends like no other.
Since women are talking about you, your girlfriends will always support you even if there is an argument. You want to encourage activities where you can have fun independently with your girlfriends, but avoid things like girls’ nights out in bars where she’ll be facing you and can’t control the legendary friend’s appearance. Offer to pay her and her friends to do their nails on a Sunday morning. I guarantee your friend won’t be in the nail salon on a Sunday morning and you’ll walk out smelling like rose.
Get her out of that boy’s social circle.
You want to make a conscious and covert effort to remove your girlfriend from the social circle to which the supposed friend belongs. If you’re all going to go to bars on a Friday night, try learning about this ahead of time and plan a romantic dinner just for the two of you away from where your friend will hang out. On things like her birthday, take her out of town or encourage her to events with her friends who are just girls like them who go to the salon together. If the friend has some confidence that they will resist and try to bring your girlfriend back to their world, you should give her as many better alternatives as possible so that she is not tempted to go out with the friend.
If all else fails, drop it.
The sad news is that some women are simply addicted to the attention they get from other men and no matter how good their boyfriend is, they refuse to have no friends. There needs to be a point in your relationship fairly quickly (in most cases at the two-month mark) when, if she doesn’t start to show signs of pulling away from her friends, you should walk away from her. Believe me, you don’t want to be in a long-term relationship with a girl who has a lot of friends and you certainly don’t want your wife to be with other men all the time. There are many things that men have to do when dating women who are unbalanced, we have to ask women out, we have to pay for dates, we have to protect them; it’s perfectly fair that after a reasonable time you require your friends to hit the road. If you’ve tried all of the above tactics and she still has these friends waiting behind the scenes, it might be time to find a better girlfriend.
