Every Child Is Special: A Film Review

every child is special It’s probably my first Bollywood movie. (I do not count millionaire Because I’ve seen it only in parts and I haven’t even reached the end, ha ha.) In any case, every child is special is a Hindi drama film released in 2007 (Taare Zameen Par, translation: Stars on Earth) Produced and directed by Aamir Khan. It tells of a boy, Ishaan Awasthi, who was always getting into trouble at school for misbehaving and being out of focus in his lessons. Too often, his teacher caught him daydreaming and getting low grades. Because of this, his father sent him to a boarding school, lonely and homesick in hopes of disciplining him. But Ishaan’s academic status still hasn’t improved. Instead, he became withdrawn and reclusive, far from the active, fun-loving Ishaan. Then came a new art teacher who would just change the way Ishaan would act towards school and learn to appreciate himself even more.

How not to love this movie? Darsheel Safary is perfect for the role of Ishaan Awasthi. Safary, with his innocent eyes and face, made me laugh at his funny antics and at the same time break my heart as he goes through the agony of enduring boarding school alone and away from his parents. From start to finish, the movie held my attention and the musical parts increased my fascination. I can’t speak to the technical aspects of movie making as I don’t know them, but for an easy to please movie buff like myself, every child is special it is a moving film.

***SPOILER ALERT***

every child is special is a revelation about the value and importance of every child. The story deals with a problem as real as it is unknown: dyslexia. I first learned about dyslexia in the book, Pearl Port by Randall Wallace, but the movie has increased my education about this type of ailment.

every child is special is a movie that can strike a chord and at the same time bring hope that having dyslexia is not a hopeless situation. Family support, patience, and love are central themes in this story, in addition to the main focus on painting and art. The theory of multiple intelligences in education plays an important role in this film and can be very informative for both teachers and parents.

I love this movie and I recommend it to everyone. My sister has also been scolding me to look the three idiots. Maybe tonight.

5 stars.
