Bass management is the process of distributing sound frequencies between speakers. For a complete home theater experience, bass needs to be distributed between speakers and subwoofers in the proper manner. This can be accomplished through manual or automated bass management. In an automatic setup, the receiver will use its bass management function to distribute the frequency range. If you choose to perform manual bass management, you’ll have to adjust the crossover frequency, a point where the mid/high and low-frequency signals are separated.

The bass management function will then filter out the bass from the center channel. Typically, this is done to make sure that the bass from the speaker isn’t too strong or overpowering. Occasionally, the automatic bass management function may miscalculate the frequency points of a given speaker or subwoofer. Some AVRs allow the user to assign the crossover frequency to a specific speaker channel. Others offer a global crossover frequency. Choosing the right crossover frequency is important, especially if you have a tower speaker.
